December 16, 2005 -- Do you get a real or an artificial tree this year? San Francisco officials are offering a third alternative -- rent-a-tree.
The San Francisco Department of the Environment calls the tree rental program "a guilt-free option."
But the trees aren't the traditional Christmas variety. They're potted olive and box trees that will be planted in neighborhoods that need sprucing up once the holidays are over.
The city had 100 trees for rent at 90 bucks apiece and all have been taken. One man rented three trees for his cabinet shop. He calls himself an unrepentant tree hugger.
