Local ditches car in Nebraska cornfield; jail ensues

Friday, September 11, 2009

A Delaware man who abandoned his car in a cornfield while trying to elude troopers has been given eight months in a Nebraska jail.

In a deal with prosecutors, 36-year-old Frank Dougherty pleaded no contest to misdemeanor flight to avoid arrest.

Dougherty is from Harrington, Del.

The Nebraska State Patrol says Dougherty was stopped the night of July 8 in south-central Nebraska, suspected of not paying for gas at a station earlier that evening.

As the trooper approached the car, Dougherty sped off down Interstate 80.

After a short chase, Dougherty exited onto a county road, then cut through a farmstead into a cornfield.

Troopers later found his car but not Dougherty. He was arrested the next morning near the Minden interchange.
