Kraft Foods to Move Processed Cheese Production

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Kraft Foods Incorporated will eliminate its processed cheese manufacturing line at its plant near Allentown.

The line makes individually wrapped Kraft Singles and other processed cheese products. It employs 213 hourly and 21 salaried employees, or more than 40 percent of the 555 workers of the Upper Macungie Township plant.

Company spokeswoman Cathy Pernu says production will be moved to more efficient plants in the Midwest in summer 2008. She says positions will be reduced through attrition over the next 15 months and some people on the cheese production line could be shifted to other jobs.

Grey Poupon mustard, A-1 Steak Sauce and some natural cheese products will still be made at the plant.
