Tot's identity stolen

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

You need to be at least 18 years old to enlist in the military. But apparently, someone tried to enlist an 18-month-old!

A couple in southern New Jersey is upset because their 18-month-old son's identity was stolen. It was then used by someone trying to enlist in the U.S. Army.

Amanda Niroda says she was shopping last Wednesday at the Turnersville Wal-Mart around midnight when she noticed a man was following her around the store. The man allegedly stole Niroda's purse, which contained her son Aaron's Social Security number.

Monday, Niroda says she got a surprising call from the Army. "And I had mentioned the fact that he was only one and a half years old," Niroda said, "She said, 'I have received an e-mail a couple of days ago that he wanted to join the Army.' I said, 'It's impossible,' and I mentioned that my purse has gotten stolen."

Niroda and her fiance David Edmonds say they've tried to get help from the Army to figure out how their son's identity could be used to enlist. They've also sought assistance from local police and Wal-Mart on tracking down the thief who stole her purse.

So far, it's all still a mystery.
