November 9, 2009 (WPVI) -- British stroller maker Maclaren and the Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling approximately 1 million strollers after the company receiving a dozen reports of children's fingertips getting amputated by a hinge on the strollers.
British stroller maker Maclaren is recalling a million strollers, after receiving a dozen reports of childrens' fingertips getting amputated in a hinge on the strollers. It's a big recall in terms of the number of units affected, and because the potential injury is irreversible.
The hinge mechanism is located on the side of the strollers, and injury has occurred when children are getting into the strollers as well as when they're already seated in the strollers.
And locally, parents are understandably concerned:
"I'm surprised because Maclaren is usually a name people trust," said Christine Carlson."It sort of just makes you aware of how careful you need to be with everything," said Jessica Boyles. "Especially when you're a parent or have several children, you're not necessarily thinking about everything and you're expecting the products you're using to be safe."
This recall involves all Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers. The word "Maclaren" is printed on the stroller.
The affected models included Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.
The strollers were sold at: Babies"R"Us, Target and other juvenile product and mass merchandise retailers nationwide from 1999 through November 2009 for between $100 and $360, and were manufactured in China.
Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled strollers and contact Maclaren USA to receive a free repair kit. For additional information, contact Maclaren USA toll-free at (877) 688-2326 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit the firm's Web site at www.maclaren.us/recall.
