Consignment deals for kids in West Chester

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

In this economy, we don't hear a lot of stories about businesses that are expanding. So when we heard that a children's consignment shop in West Chester was moving to bigger quarters to accomodate business growth, we had to check it out.

The shop is Butterflies and Blossoms, a children's clothing consignment shop and toy store located at 3 North Five Points Road in West Chester, Pa.

Owner Susan Hunter explains, "We carry everything from maternity clothing in children's newborn up through size 12, as well baby equipment and some consigned toys."

Among the deals we found: a $28 Izod tennis dress for $8.99, a new-with-tags boy's bathing suit that was $22.50 for $6.99, and Lilly Pulitzer infant rompers, with the $62 price tag on them for $19.99.

Hunter says she takes in about 2000 new pieces per week and gets them out onto the sales floor the day after they're consigned.

Average prices on the consigned clothes are one-third to one-half of new retail.

Dee Shupard of West Chester stopped in during her lunch break to get summer outfits for her 3-month-old son.

"I love the variety of things," Shupard says. "There's something new every week when you come in. And the prices are pretty great when you compare them to going to a retail store."

And because what's on the racks is constantly changing, customers keep coming back.

"I credit serving the community with items of multiple price ranges so that people who have almost nothing and people who really want the designer items can all shop here at the same time," Hunter says.
