Consignment shops boost Narberth

NARBERTH, Pa. - March 16, 2011 (WPVI) -- Unlike other small-town shopping strips, the main street in Narberth Borough, Montgomery County, has very few empty stores, thanks to a boom in consignment shopping.

Robin Ecklund's Revivals Boutique opened in Narberth nearly 16 years ago -- carrying women's resale from names like Prada and Chanel. And as the economy weakened, the store's popularity grew.

Ecklund says, "A couple of years ago we definitely saw a shift -- it's absolutely gotten busier. More people looking to consign their high-end item, as well as a new clientele. People who never would've thought about purchasing resale items are now absolutely interested in it."

As other storefronts opened up, Ecklund expanded.

Twice as Nice is a children's consignment shop, owned by a mother-daughter duo. Business was going so well for them, they recently moved their shop to a bigger space across the street from their original location.

And now, Revivals is opening a men's consignment shop as well.

There, you can find suits from Armani for $200, ties from Versace for $65, and even a Prada polo shirt for $80.

"We had guys coming in here all the time, asking how come we don't do men," Ecklund says. "Over the past couple of years, we realized there definitely was a market -- that guys want the same choices that women have. So, we've opened up the space and we've had a really good response to it."
