March 23, 2012 (WPVI) -- Jonathan Weinberg was bragging to his mom about the great deals he got on car rentals, using comparison shopping and coupon codes. She encouraged him to turn his skill into a business - which is how AutoSlash got its start.
"Autoslash is a website that helps users save money on car rentals. What makes us unique is that we automotically apply coupons and discounts codes to lower your rate after booking," he said.
When you book through AutoSlash, the price you see on the screen is the most amount you'll pay. Many users end up paying about 25 percent less by the time they get to the rental calendar.
The website does the work for you - checking for better deals and coupons and stacking them together every day.
"We basically run that through our computer systems to find out which ones are the opitmal discount codes to get you the lowest possible rates. Then we apply those codes to automatically lower your rates after booking," said Weinberg.
He suggests going on the site as soon as you know your travel dates and destination.
Just because you're saving money, that doesn't mean you'll end up with a car from a no-name rental company.
"The discount companies like Dollar Thrifty and Advantage they are going to be more aggressive with rates than Hertz but the flipside is that more discount codes can usually be applied to company like Hertz," said Weinberg.
He also says you might be able to find the same deals as AutoSlash on your own, but why bother?
"There's nothing we're doing as autoslash that a consumer couldn't do on their on. But do you really want to spend your time going out there looking for discount rates on your own. We're a free service so let us do it for you," said Weinberg.
