Jomar launches designer eBay site

Monday, August 20, 2012

Philadelphia's Jomar stores are known for their low prices, but not so much for really high-end designer clothes.

That is changing, though, as Jomar ventures into the online world of eBay shopping -- with JMTO, or Jomar Textiles online.

Barry Segal, who heads up JMTO explains, "The merchandise is much higher priced (than what's found in their stores). It's really designer, it's the kind of merchandise you would find in Neiman's or Bergdorff Goodman, or Bloomingdales, high-end Bloomingdales."

Segal gave us a behind-the-scenes peek at the warehouse full of stock for this new online venture. The company buys lots of unsold merchandise from high-end stores and designers, without really knowing what they'll get.

Workers sift through the boxes and pull the top items to sell on eBay, the rest goes to the local stores.

And the discounts online are deep.

"We're selling for approxmiately 20%-40% of retail. That's 60% to 80% off, " Segal explains.

Some examples:
A $795 men's Tahari leather jacket for $320
A Costume Nationale men's jacket that retails for $1200 for $480
A $1400 pink Dolce and Gabbana cocktail dress for $556
A blue Escada dress for $198 -- instead of the $495 retail price.

Also, some awesome, shoes, boots and houseware items like linens.

All the sales are "Buy it Now" or "best Offer," so you're not bidding against other customers for the deals
