Saving with 6abc: Thredup gives cash for kids clothes

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

f you are a parent looking to recoup some of the money you've spent outfitting your kids, there's a unique website where you send them the items for free, and they send you the cash.

Stacie Dale is digging up some cash just in her kids' closets! For all of the clothes her kids have outgrown size- or style-wise, this mother of two gets a return on her retail investment with thredup.

"You basically get a bag in the mail for free and you fill it up with your kids clothes and send it off to them," customer Stacie Dale told Action News, "and they give you cash for your clothes."

"I think all moms want to get something back for all of the money they have invested in their kids."

The clothes must meet consignment-style criteria: No rips, holes, stains or snags.

"They pay more for premium brands like Ralph Lauren, Pampolina, Abercrombie and Gap.

Stacie paid about $30 for a pair of Abercrombie jeans which have just been collecting dust in Katie's closet."

"I would expect to get probably $6 for those... for this whole pile I think I will get about $45."

Once you've packed up the free, prepaid bag, just pop it in the mail, within 10 days thredup pays up.

You can take the PayPal payout or do a little retail recycling by shopping around their site which sells all of the new or gently used items it receives.

"The first bag I did," Dale said, "I got $40 out of it and my daughter and I did go shopping with that."
