Saving with 6abc: Site finds money-saving cell phone plans
April 24, 2013 (WPVI) -- Todd Dunphy used to work for Verizon Wireless. Now, he's on a mission to help cell-phone users save money.
"In the US, there's $52.8 billion in what we call 'wireless waste,' which is the difference between what you pay and what you use," he explains. "On average, we're seeing about $300 a year per family in savings."
Dunphy and his partners founded Vera, a company where they get paid to help big businesses cut down on their cell-phone spending. But now, through the site SaveLoveGive.com, they're offering those same services to consumers for free.
It takes just a few minutes. You go to their site, and provide them with the user name and password for your cell-phone account, so they can access your bill.
Dunphy says your private information, like your credit card number, remains safe. "By us having access, all we're doing, just to be super-clear, we're just going to get the bill. We're not messing around and grabbing anything else, we're just getting that bill. But we can't see the credit card number anyway."
SaveLoveGive's software looks at your usage, and compares it to your provider's available plans.
Dunphy adds, "We look at all the charges, all the usage and then we have a database that has all the avaiable plans. So, if you're Verizon, we'll look at all your charges and usage and then we'll compare it to what's available, plan-wise,and show you what you have, show you what you're spending with the plan you have, and then give you four recommendations on how you can save money You click a button that says 'Select this plan,' and it puts it into an email for the carrier."
Dunphy says you can change plans each month to maximize your savings. Right now, the site works with Verizon and AT&T, but they're planning to add T-Mobile and Sprint soon.
Here's another tip. When you log in to your phone carrier account, Dunphy suggests using your work email address. That's because lots of companies have money-saving deals with the carriers, and if your company name is part of your email address, you'll have access to those savings as well.
