Tips for Pet Care Savings
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - May 20, 2013 (WPVI) -- Pet owners looking for ways to save on care for man's best friend have a new resource.
Pet360.com is a Plymouth Meeting-based website.
" We have a little bit of everything," explains Editor-in-Chief Wendy Toth. "We have shopping, we have articles and educational pieces, and we have a great community."
Toth says pet owners can save by shopping through site, which offers bulk purchasing and an auto-ship option.
"We offer free shipping on all orders over $49, so that makes bulk buying even better," Toth says. "And we have a system called 'auto-ship.' It's like a subscription. You can sign up and maybe have your food delivered monthly, and then your budgeting becomes very simple."
Pet owners can also find money-saving advice, the most important of which, Toth says, is to keep up on your pet's preventive care.
She explains, "The thing that will save you the most over the life of your pet is preventive care. So, even if your pet seems healthy, don't skimp on the checkups. That involves tests, blood tests, vaccinations, and even dental cleanings sometimes. By preventing a disease, you can save on a disease becoming costly further down the line."
For example, getting a dog's teeth cleaned may cost $150. But, Toth explains, treating periodontal disease is twice that, and a tooth extraction could be more than $800.
She also advises using a measuring cup and sticking with your vet's recommendations on how much food your pet should eat.
She says, "If you over-feed your pet by just a cup a day, you can end up spending between $150 and $300 (more) by the end of the year. Plus, it's better for your pet to eat the right portions."
And she says you can save on pet toys, by keeping them in a bin, and only letting your pet play with three to five each week.
"At the end of the week, put those back in and take out three to five new, and that way your pet stays interested and you extend the life of the toy from a few months to even years," she says.
Signing up for Pet360 is free. And through May 27, 2013, if you use the code 6ABC, you can take 10% off any $75 purchase you make through the site.
