Suspect sought after cab driver stabbed in neck
DEPTFORD TWP., N.J. - June 11, 2010 (WPVI) -- Police are looking for the person who stabbed a cab driver in the neck early Friday morning in Deptford Township, N.J.
It all began around 3:00 a.m. when the 28-year-old cab driver, Shaun McDonel, who works for the Lindenwold Cab Company, picked up a passenger in the ShopRite parking lot on Blackwood-Clementon Road on Gloucester Township.
They arrived at "The Club" apartment complex in the Locust Grove section of Deptford Township, where the passenger asked McDonel what the fare was and then stabbed him.
The reason for the attack is unknown.
Shaun's mother Susan says her son does not understand why this happened.
"What Shaun keeps saying is, he doesn't understand, the guy didn't ask him for the money, he asked Shaun what the fare was, Shaun told him, and the guy just reached around and slit Shaun's throat," Susan said.
Susan McDonel says her son told her the attacker left the cab after the stabbing and returned to take about $100.
McDonel called for help on his radio as the attacker ran off.
Fellow cabbies Steve and Laurie Moser heard it. Steve was close by and soon arrived on the scene.
"It was just horrible when I got there, he was covered in blood, disorientated, he didn't know what was going on," Steve said.
"It was very scary to hear one of your fellow cab drivers calling out for help; he was terrified over the radio and he was barely coming through," Laurie said.
Police arrived and searched the area, but the attacker could not be found and remains on the loose.
No clues to the attacker's identity have been released so far.
One resident of The Club complex said he doesn't believe the location was picked at random.
"I would imagine it's somebody who knows the area, because there's so many different woods you could escape in," said T.J. Caraffa. "Nobody would randomly come back here and say 'I think I'm going to try this out.'"
McDonel who just turned 28 also works as a bouncer. His friends call him 'Tiny' and say he's a gentle giant.
"Words can't explain how angry and scared [we are] at the same time because you don't expect to get that kind of phone call in the middle of the night," Shaun's brother Bob said.
"It doesn't deserve to happen with someone with as good as a heart as Shaun," friend Tim Campbell said.
A $3,000 reward is being offered to help find the attacker.
