DeWeese gets prison; must pay fine, restitution

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Former longtime House Democratic leader Bill DeWeese has been sentenced to 2-1/2 to 5 years in prison.

He must pay a $25,000 fine and $117,000 in restitution for corruption.

Judge Todd Hoover on Tuesday sentenced the 62-year-old DeWeese to prison. He also ordered DeWeese to pay a $25,000 fine and another $117,000 in restitution.

A jury convicted the former Greene County lawmaker in February of conspiracy, conflict of interest and three counts of theft interest for illegally using state employees and other public resources for political campaigns between 2001 and 2006.

The sentencing came after DeWeese resigned from the House. The state constitution bars felons from serving in the Legislature.
