Kids favorite books come to life on stage at Walnut Street Theatre
PHILADELPHIA - August 25, 2013 (WPVI) -- The Walnut Street Theatre is set to kick off a new season for both adults and the wee ones as well.
Walnut Street Theatre for Kids is geared toward children kindergarten through 6th grade and this season the series will bring 5 classic family books to musical life on the Walnut's main stage.
The kid's season starts with Seussical Jr, a musical performed by students in the summer camp program that brings the spirit of the classic Dr. Seuss books off the page and onto the stage.
Tom Quinn, Director of Education said, "There are bright colorful characters there, thing 1 and thing 2, the cat in the hat, all the favorites the kids love."
The theme of the show is acceptance.
"The show is really about accepting people that are different and the whole idea of that everybody has something to offer and can be celebrated.," said Quinn.
For the holiday's, there's the classic tale of the Christmas Carol.
"We've done it every year, it's a holiday tradition," added Quinn.
"Our January and February show is called Alexander who is not not not not not going to move, I may have left a not out. It shows kids that parents are on their side and that it's going to be okay and dealing with change is something they can handle," continued Quinn.
The March production of Pinkalicious is a celebration of all things delicious.
Quinn added ,"Not only is it about a little girl who loves pink but it's also about nutrition and making good eating choices!"
The season wraps with the Monster who Ate My Peas! The goal of the series is to bring children's literature to life.
"So we take books that they know, put it on the stage, and they realize the wonderful combination between reading and theatre," said Quinn.
Seussical Jr. takes the stage September 21st and 28th. For tickets to this or any of the other Kid series shows, visit Walnut Street Theatre.
