September 8, 2013 (WPVI) -- It will be an evening of fanfare, a concert bookended with before and after parties. The opening night festivities kick off a season designed to showcase the orchestra's strengths while also branching out in ways you've never seen before.
Opening night is an all Tchaikovsky affair, performing some of the greatest music from one of the favorite composers of all time.
"Tchaikovsky's music is filled with so many grand melodies whether it's in the violin concerto or Romeo and Juliet or a really uplifting and heroic work like the Marche Slave, this is just some of the most rousing and satisfying repertoire," Jeremy Rothman, VP of Artistic Planning, said.
The violin concerto will be performed by soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter.
"Anne Sophie Mutter is one of the top violin soloists in the world and also an incredibly glamorous and charismatic artist," Rothman said.
The program will give audience members a taste of the Tchaikovsky Festival planned for later this season. The orchestra will also focus on Mozart and feature three new commissions written for Philadelphia Orchestra musicians.
"Yannick has worked very carefully to curate the season that gives it great breadth and variety of repertoire," Rothman said.
The orchestra is also partnering for the first time with Philadanco and Opera Philadelphia.
"When we work with Philadanco, we'll have a cast of dancers on a portion of the stage together with our musicians and really combining the two art forms in a very creative and novel way. And in collaborating with Opera Philadelphia, we're going to create a new kind of experience inside Verizon Hall," Rothman said.
Opening night is September 25th. For tickets to that or any of the concerts, this season, go to philorch.org.
