BELLMAWR, N.J. - October 30, 2009 (WPVI) -- Students at the Larc School in Bellmawr, New Jersey were learning the days of the week and months of the year when Action News stopped by for a visit.
Each student has different needs and goals.
Teachers at the school depend on extra tools like a special device that helps student Zach Oteri communicate.
A mobile stander helps Alexis Shockley, who can't stand or walk on her own, get around. While the school gets funding through the students' districts, it also depends on donations.
"Even if it's $5, we so appreciate it because those $5 add up," Larc School Executive Director Susan Weiner said.
Even just one chair like Alexis's can cost up to $1,800. That's why the Larc School is hoping for a big turnout Sunday at the Run the Bridge Race.
All proceeds will help the kids with special needs develop and be the best they can be.
"It's just really neat to see the kids progress from week to week or even day to day; every day you have something different," Special Education teacher Christine Smith said.
Students at the school are not only learning language and numbers, but just as important, they're also socializing and having fun.
"Although many are nonverbal, you know when your child is happy, as a parent we can all relate to that," Weiner said.
