August 25, 2011 (WPVI) -- There are a lot of general preparations everyone has to make to be prepared for a hurricane, but there are some additional, critical things to think about if you have medical problems or if you take care of someone with medical problems.
As Hurricane Irene approaches, city officials are urging everyone to prepare, especially if you have medical needs.
You should start with your emergency kit.
Judge Renee Caldwell Hughes of the Red Cross says if you take medication, you should have a 7 day supply and also a copy of all prescriptions.
"Automatically, you think of medications, but I want also copy of contact lenses, eyeglasses, and any prescriptions you have, you should have a copy and keep them in a safe place," suggests Judge Renee Caldwell Hughes, CEO, Southeastern PA Red Cross.
Also if you depend on electricity for medical equipment, you will need a back-up plan if the storm knocks out your power.
If you can, get a small generator; otherwise make plans to go away from the storm.
"So you want to identify family, friends that you can go to, to help keep your equipment running," says Judge Hughes.
Plus, everyone should fill up their gas tank, charge your phone and take out some cash.
"If the power goes out, you may not be able to access your bank account, so you want to have some cash to handle your emergency needs, not a great amount, but some measure of cash," Judge Hughes suggests.
Also, if you take care of someone with medical needs, these are things to help them with. And if you have neighbors that may need assistance, it's a good idea to check in with them right away to make sure they have someone looking after them over the weekend.
The Red Cross has counselors available for anyone who may need assistance dealing with stress or emotional concerns that could occur during hurricane preparations. The number to call for counseling: 215-299-4000.
