POTTSVILLE, Pa. (AP) - August 26, 2005 -- A Schuylkill County woman has been ordered to stand trial for allegedly shaking a three-month-old niece she was baby-sitting.
Authorities say the shaking resulted in brain damage and blindness to the infant.
Twenty-two-year-old Jenna Hummel of Pine Grove is charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, simple assault and reckless endangerment.
District Judge Carol Pankake of Tremont freed Hummel yesterday on bail.
Hummel told police she was changing her niece Jade Brown's diaper on November ninth when she turned and hit the girl in the head with her elbow. She said she then shook her to try to get a response.
State Trooper Timothy Reinoehl said the blow fractured the baby's skull and the shaking caused swelling and internal bleeding.
