Woman Mistaken for Dead

Monday, November 21, 2005

State police say paramedics mistakenly pronounced a woman dead at the scene of an accident near Dover.

When troopers realized the woman was still alive more than 90 minutes after the crash, firefighters returned to the scene, freed her from her wrecked car and had her flown to Christiana Hospital.

The crash happened before dawn Saturday on Route One, about a quarter mile south of the Dover Toll Plaza.

Police say the car driven by 42-year-old Brenda Pitner of Frederica hit a man who was on the shoulder of the highway inspecting the boat he was towing behind his pickup. The man, 49-year-old George Grissom of Bear, was killed.

The preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol was a factor in the crash. It remains under investigation.
