Criminals are gambling on hopes for a big jackpot in Delaware. State officials say some Delaware residents are getting sent phony checks that look like real state treasury checks. Scam artists send the checks with a letter that claims the recipient won a lottery but to redeem the money the recipient needs to send money for "processing" fees.
State Treasurer Jack Markell says the checks are phony.
If you get a suspicious check in the mail, contact the state Attorney General's Fraud and Consumer Protection Division at 577-8600 (five-seven-seven, 86-hundred).
