Police: Child Finds Cocaine Stash

Thursday, February 16, 2006

In Delaware County, police have charged a man because they say he left a stash of cocaine near a baby's crib and the child got into the drugs.

The 1-year-old girl apparently came into contact with the cocaine while she was at home.

Authorities say the mother reported that when she found the child, the child had a white powder over her face and she was crying. The mother, according to authorities, went back into the area of the baby's crib and found several packets of what she suspected was crack cocaine.

The girl had gotten into an old prescription bottle filled with up to 6 packs of cocaine. She had apparently gnawed into at least one of the bags.

Their next door neighbor, 24-year-old Michael Brown, has been charged with leaving the cocaine there. He had slept at the home of the baby's family because when his mother did not let him into her home, the baby's mother let him come inside to sleep.

Police think the neighbor hid the cocaine in or near the crib and then forgot about it when he left in the morning.

Authorities are not sure how much the baby ingested, but she was treated and released from the hospital.

The neighbor is being held on $50,000 cash bond.
