Police Chase Ends in Crash

Monday, March 20, 2006

Police are still putting together the pieces after a series of crashes resulted after officers started chasing an allegedly stolen car. One of the people injured is a former Philadelphia police commissioner.

Chopper 6 flew over the aftermath just before noon at the intersection of 9th and Morris streets in South Philadelphia.

Here is what Action News has learned: Apparently police were chasing a stolen car suspect through several streets in South Philadelphia. At some point, the driver of the allegedly stolen car hit a moving car. That car, in turn, slammed into the back of another vehicle.

Sources also tell Action News that the first car that was hit was driven by former Philadelphia police commissioner Richard Neal. He went to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment of a minor neck injury.

We're told another man, believed to be in his 20s, was injured and was transported to Jefferson Hospital. So far, there is no word, yet if that man is the suspect or a victim.

We will continue to monitor this breaking story and will have the very latest as details unfold.
