Capano Gifts Irk Some

Friday, May 12, 2006

Some people with close ties to two Catholic schools aren't pleased about the one million dollar donations to both from the brother of one of Delaware's most famous murderers.

Plans call for facilities at the schools to be named for the parents of the donor -- developer Louis Capano Junior, who admitted destroying evidence and harassing a witness during the investigation that led to the murder conviction of his brother, Thomas Capano.

Officials at the two schools say they accepted the gifts in the Catholic tradition of forgiveness.

The decision by Saint Edmond's Academy to name its new gym after Louis Capano Senior, led to the resignations of two members of the school's board of directors -- including former F-B-I Director Louis Freeh. Archmere Academy will name its new student life center after Louis Capano Senior and wife Marguerite.

Thomas Capano was convicted in the 1996 slaying of Anne Marie Fahey. Her nephew is a student at Saint Edmond's, with plans to attend Archmere next year.
