Teens, Council Strike Laser Tag Deal

Monday, May 22, 2006

The borough struck a deal with a group of teenagers who want to use a city park for laser tag.

David Sandberg, 17, a Saucon Valley High School junior, petitioned council for permission to play the game in the park, which closes at dusk.

Police Chief Robert Balum and several other officials opposed the idea.

"We don't have enough (officers) to baby-sit," the chief told council.

But council members Jennifer McKenna and Tony Branco said the teens deserved a chance.

"We keep pushing our young people from this spot to that spot," Branco said.

Sandberg agreed to a regulated system where borough officials would be notified in advance of any games. Participants would have to sign agreements so the borough could not be held liable for any injuries suffered.

The teens also agreed to serve as an "extra set of eyes" for borough police, who are combating vandalism at the park.
