Phila. may Toughen Curfew Laws

Friday, July 14, 2006

Philadelphia city hall is embarking on a plan to make the city's curfew law more enforcible by giving young people an alternative to the streets.

The Dixon House is a multi-service social work agency that will soon be used as South Philadelphia's curfew center because of the explosion of teen violence in the Point Breeze section.

The city will launch a curfew crackdown on youth 18 and under. The belief is getting them off the mean streets and into a center if their parents cannot be found will make them less likely to commit crimes or become victims.

The existing curfew hours will be strictly enforced the mayor says: Sunday thru Thursday 10:30 pm to 6:00 am, and Friday and Saturday from 12:00 am to 6 am.

The curfew center will be staffed by professional social workers and 70 trained volunteers from the neighborhood.

Predictably, a further curfew crackdown is going over like a lead balloon with local teens.
