September 21, 2006 (WPVI) -- Camden County authorities are investigating the robbery of a postal truck in Gibbsboro.
Certainly not something you see everyday. A postal worker is held up at gunpoint.
It happened at 6:00 Thursday night. It was actually a truck driver, a subcontractor for the postal service. He was making his last pickup at the post office when two masked men armed with a gun held him up. They then handcuffed him, put him in the back of his truck.
The thieves took off with five bags of mail. The truck driver was able to bust his way out of the truck, breaking a hole into the top of the truck. He was able to stick his head out and that's when an eyewitness walking his dog heard his cries for help.
Action News spoke with the Postal Inspector. The truck driver was uninjured.
As to why these thieves targeted the mail, it could be a number of reasons. They could be look for personal information. Often they don't find cash in mail but they may be looking for social security numbers and other personal information.
As for a description of the thieves, authorities don't have one because they wore masks. There were reports they were wearing postal uniforms but that was not confirmed at this time.
