Final Delivery for Married Mail Carriers

Friday, November 17, 2006

An era came to a close on Friday in Burlington County, New Jersey. A husband and wife team of mail carriers made its last delivery.

81-year-old George Mick and his 75-year-old wife Jeanette are partners in life and, for the last four decades, partners on the job at the Chatsworth Post Office

Happily married for 52 years, the Micks have spent 44 of those years working part-time sorting and delivering mail. They finally decided to retire and Friday was their last day.

George Mick says his father and grandfather worked at the post office before him.

Friday's retirement was marked with a cake, citations and good wishes

After sorting the mail, it was back on the road for the final run dropping off letters and packages to the 50 homes on their route in this rural Pine Barren community. The Micks missed just one delivery in 44 years. That was because of snow and the post office was closed.

When George and Jeanette started in 1962, John Kennedy was president, zip codes did not exist, and stamps cost 4 cents

It was also the year Cathy Dilks was born. She'll replace the Micks starting Monday.
