Woman Arrested in Dumpster Baby Case

Thursday, December 28, 2006

Investigators believe they know who placed a newborn boy into a trash bag and into a dumpster.

They have arrested 18 year-old Simone Walker, who lives in the apartment complex where the baby was found.

She is charged with endangering the welfare of a child. She is held on $100,000 bail.

Because of state law, officials cannot confirm whether or not Walker is the mother of the baby.

Walker is an Atlantic County Community College student. She was arrested early Thursday.

The baby was discovered around 5:00 Wednesday afternoon in a dumpster at a complex along Route 40 in Atlantic County. A neighbor putting out trash heard a whimper and called for help.

Several residents got the baby out of the dumpster, wrapped him in blankets and kept him warm in a car until police arrived.

Officials say the 6 pound, 4 ounce baby boy was just hours old. The baby has been upgraded to fair condition at the Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center in Galloway Twp., NJ.

The Division of Youth and Family Service now has control of the baby.
