Cheyney to Offer Testing Amid HIV Scare

Monday, February 12, 2007

Officials at Cheyney University are dealing with an HIV scare on campus.

Health alerts have been posted around Cheyney's campus, and HIV testing with on the spot results, are planned for Wednesday.

Police on Thursday arrested a prostitute they say is HIV positive after she allegedly had unprotected sex with up to 10 students on campus.

The woman's name is Sakinah Floyd. Any students who had sexual contact with the 36-year-old, are urged to seek HIV testing.

"I think it's ridiculous," said junior Layana Carter. "Her coming up here and being up here for as long as she was up here. How come nobody knew?"

"It's a worry in a lot of people's minds. A lot of people aren't going to come out and say it, but we're pretty much worried," said junior Roland Hughes

While the campus is on edge, Floyd is facing aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and prostitution charges.

The school says Floyd admitted to authorities that she is HIV positive. Now, some students are worried the virus could spread on campus.

"It was a popular group who she slept with, and the popular group is the same group that the females sleep with," said Larese Carter. "I think if she did have AIDS, it's going to spread very fast if they don't get tested."

That's why University officials quickly began informing students trying to quell fears and make sure students take the necessary precautions. The school's health center is now providing testing and medication.

The school won't comment on any disciplinary action for the students who were allegedly involved with the woman.
