February 16, 2007 -- The chairman of Temple University Health Systems says the hospital has to reduce expenses by 35 to 40 million dollars. That means the health care organization will begin laying off 350 full-time and part-time employees effective today.
They also will eliminate 150 positions currently unfilled.
Temple treats more uninsured and under-insured patients than any other provider in Pennsylvania. However, Temple attributes this treatment to much of its fiscal circumstance.
In a letter to Action News, Temple Health Systems Chairman and CEO Joseph Marshall, III said, "To continue our mission, we must take immediate action to address this situation so that we achieve a stable financial position - a critical step for our long-term future."
Temple says all employees will be notified by Monday, February 19th.
