College Student Becomes Council Member

Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Two years ago, she was a bright-eyed graduate from Pennridge High School. Today, she is a college student and a member of town council.

Nickole Collins, a sophomore at Kutztown University, became a council member on Monday night.

"I believe my youth is an asset, not a hindrance to my position. I believe I can bring different, fresh ideas to the council," said Collins.

Other council members said when you have someone like Nickole, who loves her community, has done volunteer work for years, and has a grasp of local issues, her age is not a factor.

" To see a young person who wants to give back to the community is very refreshing and I hope that more follow in her footsteps," said Eadie Burke, President of the Perkasie Council.

As you'd imagine, Nickole's family is very proud.

Younger brother Bryan said having a power-wielding sister could be a good thing.

"It's good because I can give her pointers on what needs to be done," he said, laughing.

The term that Nickole stepped into expires this November, so the question is will Nickie run in the election?

"I planned on running for the seat before I got appointed. Being appointed is the extra advantage to the election, so we'll see how it goes," she said.
