Bus Fire Jams Jersey Turnpike

Tuesday, July 03, 2007

A fire on a Greyhound bus caused a huge back-up on the New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington County today.

It started around 10:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington Township.

No word exactly what happened, but half of the bus sustained smoke and fire damage.

No injuries, but Greyhound says 48 people were traveling from New York City. They waited along the side of the highway until a relief bus was dispatched from Philadelphia to pick them up.

The bus was headed to Baltimore as its next stop and the final destination was Richmond, Virginia.

Greyhound officials say customers on the bus have the option of continuing on or if they need other accomodations they would assist them in any way they can.

Greyhound is investigating the cause of the fire.

Only one lane of vehicles was getting by, so the line of traffic stretched for miles for nearly two hours.
