Britt Reid Suspected of DUI

Thursday, August 23, 2007

More legal troubles may be in store for one of the sons of Eagles head coach Andy Reid.

Shortly before 4 this afternoon an employee of Dick's Sporting Goods called Plymouth Township Police saying Britt Reid was under the influence and about to pull out of the store's parking lot, located on Chemical Road in Plymouth Township.

When police arrived Britt was just starting to drive away when he slammed into several shopping carts. They quickly pulled Reid's Dodge Ram pickup truck over. After Reid failed a field sobriety test, police took him into custody.

Britt was taken to Mercy Suburban Hospital in Norristown to be tested for illegal substances and/or alcohol in his system. Results of those tests are expected to be returned in one to two weeks.

No charges were filed Thursday. Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. said he had given instructions not to take any action until the blood test results came back, which he said would not be until Monday at the earliest.

"What we have is the possibility of a crime; we don't have evidence of a crime, not yet," Castor said.

Britt was released from police to the custody of his attorney shortly after 6:30. Police plan to conduct a search of Reid's pickup truck tomorrow. The truck remains in police hands.

On July 27th Britt pled guilty to gun and drug charges stemming from a road-rage dispute on January 30th. Reid, 22, pled guilty to a string of pending charges - including carrying a firearm without a license, a felony - as his trial was to start.

Prosecutors said they would seek six to 14 months of jail time, while the defense will seek probation.

Reid admits he pointed a gun at Larry Johnson during a road rage incident in addition to having marijuana and cocaine in his car at the time.

That same day, his older brother, Garrett, was involved in an accident in Plymouth Meeting. Garrett Reid pled guilty in June to being high on heroin when he ran a red light and slammed into another car.

While admitting his guilt, Britt Reid said nothing about Larry Johnson, the other driver. Johnson's lawyer said Johnson feels vindicated by the guilty plea since Reid originally told police it was Johnson who had a gun. Reid offered no apologies in court today.

Sentencing will happen in about three months. Johnson's lawyer says within the next couple of weeks he will file a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Reid. Britt remains free on bail on the condition that he stays clean and submits to random drug and alcohol testing.

Senior Deputy Attorney General Marc Costanzo, who prosecuted the first case, said an impaired-driving charge could violate Reid's bail conditions. Reid's lawyers have said he is undergoing outpatient treatment at a substance-abuse center.

Again, no charges have been filed at this time against Britt Reid in relation to today's incident.
