Racial Graffiti Disrupts Neighborhood

Sunday, October 28, 2007

An investigation is continuing for those who vandalized a local school with racial slurs on Saturday.

The racial slurs and remarks are disturbing.

KKK, White Power, and the N-word covered Austin Meehan Middle School Saturday morning.

"It doesn't get any worse. It's bad as anything," Jim Ballentine of Mayfair said.

Jason Simmons has lived next to the school for three years. He calls the graffiti disheartening.

"I think it's ridiculous. I mean, everybody should just learn to get along," Simmons said.

Even more troubling for Simmons and other neighbors is such graffiti is unexpected in Mayfair. They say it's an integrated multicultural neighborhood.

"I'm acutally surprised because this area is really good and we've never had any problems," neighbor Maravic Licup said.

Crews spent hours painting the racial graffiti during the afternoon.

The slurs and remarks can be covered but the hate behind the words still lingers in the community.
