WRIGHTSTOWN, N.J. - May 23, 2009 (WPVI) -- Hundreds came to remember loved ones at New Jersey's largest state run veterans' cemetery.
Brenda Weidenfeld visited her mother's gravesite while surrounded by family at the Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey.
Her mom was a WWII army vet and now rests here alongside 43,000 vets and their relatives.
The Weidenfelds are a military family. Her husband, uncle, and late father were soldiers in Vietnam, WWII & Korea.
"It's a time that I remember my friends who died in the service," Korean War Veteran Phil Abbott said.
"We pretty much had to do what we had to do. And it's nice that everybody gets together and remembers once in a while," Vietnam Veteran Lewis Weidenfeld said.
The Weidenfelds and hundreds of others observed New Jersey's annual Memorial Day ceremony at Doyle Cemetery.
The many visitors are grateful that the million American vets who've sacrificed their lives since the Civil War are not forgotten.
"It is our responsibility never, never, never to forget that sacrifice," Governor Jon Corzine said.
The ceremony means so much to so many and helps people like the Weidenfelds deal with the pain of losing loved ones who traded their lives for America's freedom.
