CLAYMONT, Del. - July 9, 2009 -- The federal government is fining Sunoco more than $200,000 for multiple health and safety violations at the Marcus Hook Refinery.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration says that the violations left employees at the refinery, which straddles the Delaware-Pennsylvania border, vulnerable to accidents that could result in injury or possible death.
A Sunoco spokesman says the company received the citation Wednesday and it has already addressed many of the concerns raised during the inspection.
The fines are not related to the fiery explosion at the refinery in May. Sunoco announced plans earlier this week to close the ethylene unit where the blast occurred.
OSHA is still investigating that explosion, but Sunoco's initial investigation found that pipe failure caused the gas leak.Get Action News on your website
