A Philadelphia man's vacation on the New Jersey shore has ended in tragedy.

Authorities say 59-year-old Maury Letven and his wife, Amy Kimmich, were swimming Friday afternoon in waters off Barnegat Light when Letven began to struggle for an unknown reason. Kimmich then tried to help him, and two surfers eventually helped police pull the pair from the water at about 4 p.m.

Letven, who wasn't breathing, was taken to Southern Ocean County Hospital and died there a short time later. An autopsy was conducted Saturday, but the results were not immediately disclosed.

Officials say the couple were vacationing in Barnegat Light with friends.

It was not clear whether Kimmich was injured in the incident.
