Avondale hay bail fire

Smoke could be seen for miles.

Fire companies from Chester County and as far away as New Castle, Delaware battled a large hay bale fire overnight in Avondale, Chester County.

Flames broke out around 2:00 a.m. at a mushroom farm located along the 8100 block of Gap Newport Pike (Route 41).

Fire department officials initially reported at least a dozen large hay bales burning, but the flames quickly spread due to the high winds still blowing overnight in the area.

Front-end loaders were brought to the scene in an attempt to separate non-burning bales from the burning bales.

Smoke could be seen for miles.

So far, no reports of injuries.
