BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - November 15, 2009 (WPVI) -- A man is alive after falling into an old quarry in Bridgeport, Montgomery County. He wouldn't have been rescued at all but for a very unusual set of circumstances.
The victim has been identified as 39-year-old Michael Lenehan of Fairless Hills, Pa. He is listed in critical condition.
The old quarry is located behind the Montgomery County Parole and ARD Program offices and the Belmont Village Apartments.
At the bottom of that quarry, 65-feet below, is where the man was found. He is very lucky that a father and son found him at about 7:00 Sunday morning.
"I hope to God he's OK, I really do. And I'm really thankful we found him."
Mike Scavello Sr. and his son Mike don't know if it was fate or an act of God that brought them to their shop at Ross and Quarry Road on a Sunday.
Mike Sr. says, "We don't work on Sundays at all... We just had some trucks that needed to be repaired for the week coming and that's why we came down."
Their business, Scavello land Development, sits at the bottom of an old quarry. Behind their garage is a 65-foot stone wall.
"I couldn't help but to hear a moan. A real faint... like a death moan. You know, it was very faint. And I started looking around and I didn't see anything," explains Mike Scavello Jr.
The men went back to work on their trucks but later Mike heard the moaning again and they decided to investigate.
They traced the sound to the 65-foot wall outside the rear of their building where they saw a man lying in a pool of blood.
Mike Jr. says, "He was non-responsive. It was bad. You could tell he took a hard hit."
The men called 9-1-1 and paramedics rushed the victim, later identified as Lenehan, to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania .
Police say Lenehan was visiting someone at the Belmont Village Apartments.
