Trial ordered for Pa. man in fatal home invasion

Monday, November 16, 2009

A Philadelphia man has been ordered to stand trial in a botched home invasion robbery in eastern Pennsylvania that left a Florida man dead more than two years ago.

Authorities charged 39-year-old Angel Echevarria with more than three dozen counts including homicide and attempted homicide in the July 2007 robbery in south Bethlehem. Resident James Garcia was wounded and 34-year-old Daniel Rivera, of Tampa, Fla., was killed. Echevarria was a fugitive until his arrest in July.

District Judge Nancy Matos ruled Friday that there was enough evidence to bring the case against him to trial. Defense attorney Christopher Shipman questioned the way prosecutors linked his client to the scene and tried to cast doubt on the testimony of witnesses.
