Del. mom charged with kidnapping of her child
WILMINGTON, Del. - August 12, 2010 (WPVI) -- A Delaware mom has been linked to the May kidnapping of her child, which led to an Amber Alert being issued.
Ashlie Stumbers, 24, of Wilmington has been arrested along with her alleged accomplice, 32-year-old Mannie Brown. Police are still searching for Stumbers' sister, Sarah, in connection with this case.
It all began around 2:20 a.m. on May 11th when police received a report that a three-year-old boy was kidnapped from Murray Manor Trailer Park, located in the 500 block of 6th Avenue in Wilmington.
When officers arrived, they spoke with the boy's 24-year-old father, who had suffered multiple facial injuries. He told police he was sleeping inside his home when he woke up to three men physically assaulting and striking him with the butt of a handgun.
During the assault, the victim said he was rendered unconscious. When he awoke, he found his son was missing.
The father told police Stumbers does not normally stay with him and he has full custody of the child.
Then, around noon that day, Stumbers was found with the boy at a home in the 700 block of E. 5th Street in Wilmington. Police said Stumbers was getting ready to leave the residence. An Amber Alert issued after the boy's disappearance was then cancelled.
During the investigation, police said Stumbers' mother told them that Ashlie arrived at her home with her son at 8:30 a.m., on May 11th. She mentioned that Sarah drove them to the house.
Police say, as a result of follow-up investigations and a review of electronic files, it was discovered that Ashlie Stumbers, Sarah Stumbers and Mannie Brown were all communicating with one another just prior to the incident. Detectives say they were able to gather enough evidence to link all three to the crime.
To offer information regarding the whereabouts of Sarah Stumbers, please contact the New Castle County Police Department at 302-395-8110. Tipsters may also call Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333.
