Collingdale hit and run suspect turns himself in
COLLINGDALE, Pa. - April 4, 2012 (WPVI) -- The search for a hit and run driver in Delaware County ended Thursday night, and only Action News was there as the suspect turned himself in.
Police worked quickly to track down the car wanted in the hit and run accident, and ultimately the driver of the vehicle.
He has been identified as 21-year-old Bruce Snowden of the 1000 block of 5th Street in Chester, Pa.
Police say the incident happened around 4:00pm. A 33 year old man was struck by the car driven by Snowden at the intersection of MacDade and Chester Pike in Collingdale.
The victim was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he remains in serious condition.
Police say the accident was witnessed by a woman who called police.
"She said that she had observed the accident. She followed the vehicle down Chester Pike into Sharon Hill, and actually beeped her horn and told the guy that he had hit someone. He said some really rude things back to her using foul language, and told her to mind her own business and fled," explained Chief Robert Adams.
Police broadcast the tag number of the car which was located a half hour later in the unit block of Burnside Avenue in Sharon Hill.
The 2002 gold Pontiac Bonneville had severe hood and windshield damage that police say is consistent with the accident.
"We were able to track down the owner of the car, who had just moved here from Georgia, who said her son had the car at work. She contacted her son who said that he had loaned the car to a friend. After interviewing and speaking with the son, and he learned the severity of what had taken place, the son told us the friend's name," said Chief Adams.
Snowden was behind bars by 11:00pm Thursday night.
"It shows you that cooperation from witnesses pays off," said Chief Adams.
Snowden is expected to be arraigned early Friday morning. He faces a number of charges including fleeing the scene of an accident with injuries.
Police say this is not the first time the 21 year old has been in trouble with the law.
Police are asking anyone who may have observed the accident to contact the Collingdale Police at 610-586-0502 or County Radio at 610-565-6500.
