Pennsylvania State Police along with Philadelphia Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a motorist on the Schuylkill Expressway.

The crime happened just before 3:00am Sunday morning in the eastbound lanes near the Montgomery Drive exit.

Police say the suspects drove up beside 29-year-old Kareem El's vehicle and fired multiple shots.

El was shot at least one time in the head.

Officials say the victim's car continued to travel on the Schuylkill Expressway for sometime after he was hit and later crashed into the center median.

A passing officer was flagged down by a passenger inside the vehicle. Medics arrived and El was pronounced dead a short time later.

Authorities say it appears the victim was targeted, a notion which has left his family baffled.

Action News spoke with the victim's brother and asked if he knew anyone who would wnat to hurt El.

"No I don't. I really don't. I was with him a few hours before - we were joking and being jovial," said Derrick Lewis.

Those who knew the father of one say he was a deeply involved in the Muslim faith.

"Kareem was my spiritual brother and I will always remember that he was a loving caring brother who always had a beautiful smile on his face," said Terrance Hopkins-Bey.

Family and friends are trying to cope with their loss.

"We just ask everyone to send out their thoughts and we just ask for your strength and your prayers for the family to pull through this," said Hopkins-Bey.

So far police have no motive in the shooting and say it doesn't appear that road rage played a role.

The investigation shutdown the Schuylkill Expressway at Route 1 for several hours early Sunday morning.

The Schuylkill Expressway has cameras operated by PennDOT, but officials say they do not record.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 215-560-6200.
