Philabundance program helps neighbors "Share the Harvest"

PHILADELPHIA - July 14, 2012 (WPVI) -- Got a green thumb? Do you love to dig in the dirt and grow delicious fresh vegetables? Philabundance has a way for you to share them with the less fortunate.

"Share the Harvest" is a program that allows neighbors to help neighbors in the local fight against hunger.

"Today I have yellow squash, green squash and green beans," said Cindy Kralik.

Cindy Kralik of Buckingham brought leftover veggies from her home garden to a Philabundance "Share the harvest" drop off site at Carousel Gardens in Newtown, Bucks County.

The donation will directly serve the needs of the local community. Philabundance is hoping you follow Kralik's lead.

"I can't use it all myself so it's nice to have someone to give it to," Kralik said.

Philabundance's "Share the Harvest" program runs all summer long and seeks produce donations of all shapes and sizes to help end a hunger epidemic.

"We're seeing a lot in the suburbs, not just the city," says Lindsay Bues of Philabundance.

A Philabundance spokesperson says the group has seen a 26 percent increase in need this year compared to last year as the economy continues to struggle.

"Typically produce is the first thing cut from a grocery list when money is tight so programs like "Share the Harvest" are really important," Bues said.

Grape tomatoes and other produce grown at Carousel Gardens is specifically dedicated to the cause.

With your help, Philabundance is hoping to collect about 10,000 pounds of produce donations throughout the two month long "Share the Harvest" program.

Philabundance is collecting produce donations between now and September at various locations throughout the Delaware Valley.
