Vehicle struck by pickup kills Chester worker

CHESTER, Pa. - August 15, 2012 (WPVI) -- A subcontractor for the Chester Water Authority is dead after a vehicle ran into him, officials say.

Police say at around 3:00 p.m. the worker for Metra Industries from Little Falls, New Jersey was replacing the waterline in a hole alongside Kerlin Street near 12th in Chester, Delaware County.

At that time, a green pickup truck struck a Chester Water Authority vehicle which then ran into the worker who was halfway outside of the hole.

The 34-year-old worker was killed.

A 60-year-old CWA worker was injured in the accident and taken to the Crozer Chester Medical Center. He is reported to be in stable condition.

"The operator of the vehicle is currently being transferred to a Philadelphia hospital for treatment," Chester Police Commissioner Joseph Bail said.

"It's a devastating thing for us as a city; it's obviously devastating for the workers out here and, mostly, for his family. Our hearts to go out to his friends and family and his coworkers who were here who witnessed that," Chester Mayor John Linder said.

At this point, police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

The 34-year-old has been identified, but his name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
