PHILADELPHIA - August 18, 2012 (WPVI) -- The flag is at half staff Saturday night outside of the 22nd Police District where Officer Moses Walker, Jr. was assigned before he was gunned down on his way home from work just before 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
Family members were moved to tears when Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey delivered the dreadful news outside of Hahnemann Hospital that their loved one, 40-year-old Philadelphia Police Officer Moses Walker, Jr. had died from the gunshot wounds.
"As his mother just told me this morning, she would've never dreamed she would be at Hahnemann Hospital thinking about funeral arrangements for her son," said Commissioner Ramsey.
It was stunning news for a woman whose son was a 19 year veteran of the force.
Officers honored their fallen comrade with a salute before escorting his body from the hospital to the morgue.
It is a solemn sequence that sadly happens too often.
"We just lost officer Lorenzo," said Commissioner Ramsey. "Just a week and a half ago, we took the mourning ribbons off our badges and now we're putting them back on."
It's a tough loss for Officer Ghee who has known Walker since they graduated from the police academy together back in 1993.
"He was a good officer, a good friend. He would never hurt a fly, and no one ever had a bad word to say about him," said Officer Curtis Ghee.
In addition to his brothers and sisters in uniform, Commissioner Ramsey tells Action News, Officer Walker is survived by his mom and 5 siblings.
Walker's cousins spoke on behalf of his family today.
"He was our stronghold in our family," said Donna Seawright.
Cousin Craig Seawright says Walker served as a Deacon at Deliverance Evangelistic Church at 22nd and Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia.
No one from the church was able to comment.
