Domestic violence protections proposed for teens

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Domestic violence victims would be granted additional protections under proposed legislation being considered by the Assembly Judiciary Committee.

The panel is set to consider two domestic-violence-related bills on Thursday, along with a measure boosting the mandatory prison term for sexual assault against a child.

One bill expands domestic violence protections so they apply to teenagers age 16 and older. Another allows some domestic violence victims to testify against the accused via closed circuit television.

The panel will also consider advancing the Jessica Lunsford Act, which imposes mandatory term of 25 years to life for aggravated sexual assault against a child under age 13 and increases penalties for harboring sex offenders.
