Black Friday shopping on Thanksgiving

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - November 22, 2012 (WPVI) -- A new tradition for many people is to start black friday shopping on thanksgiving Thursday.

A lot of people have finished their Thanksgiving dinners, and are now standing in line at the Best Buy store in South Philadelphia.

However, those people aren't going to get first dibs because the Martin family of the Mantua section of Philadelphia has been in line since 2:30 p.m. yesterday.

Mama Martin made the executive decision that Thanksgiving dinner will be on Saturday because they want to get the best deals.

David Zawojski of Glendora, New Jersey is still playing the traditional thanksgiving football catch and getting ready for a turkey dinner.

"Last year we ate on the hood of our cars in plastic containers," said Zawojski.

This year, Zawojski and his family's tradition isn't at grandmas, it is in the Deptford, New Jersey Best Buy parking lot.

Their goal is to get TV's and laptops at a deep discount.

"If you buy multiple things you can save yourself thousands of dollars," added Zawojski.

Another shopper, Jennifer Cummings from West Deptford, New Jersey said, "The deals, the deals are just awesome."

It's those deals that are pulling people from Thanksgiving tables and turkeys.

Mary Louise Santiago left her turkey behind just to shop. "Its actually in the oven I'm hoping the kitchen doesn't set on fire."

Kmart in Northeast Philly is opening on and off Thanksgiving day at 6:00 a.m., 8:00 p.m. and still satisfying Black Friday traditions by re-opening at 5:00 am.

Old Navy stayed open today.

One shopper couldn't resist coming, "Its buy one get one 50 % off so that's a reason for me to come out the door."

At the South Philly Wal-Mart, there was no pause for Thanksgiving. The lights were on and the parking lot full.

There was actually some threats the Walmart workers who are upset about working on the Thanksgiving holiday will walk out tomorrow during the busiest shopping day of the year.

The Best Buy employees made things a little bit more comfortable for people in lines. They made sure the trash was picked up. They were very happy to have customers in lines, including the Martin family.
