Manhole covers blown off in Kensington

Saturday, February 09, 2013

Fire crews were called to the scene in Kensington when two manhole covers blew off.

It happened around 10:30 Saturday morning on Kensington Avenue.

PECO officials say there was a problem with a piece of underground equipment that caused it to overheat.

The buildup of heat created pressure causing the manhole covers to pop off.

No one was injured.

PECO crews arrived on the scene and manually shut off power to about 40 customers in order to make repairs.
